Taking Preventative Measures to Protect Employees

Office Equipment Designed with Safety in Mind Helps Keep Employees Injury-Free

Itasca, Ill. (February 13, 2007) - In the midst of a hectic work day, it's easy to take personal safety for granted, especially when you're surrounded by office equipment. However, one injury is one too many, making it vital to ensure workplace safety is an office priority.

As with any large equipment or electrical appliance, such as filing cabinets or laminators, businesses must properly select and operate their machines to minimize the risk of injuries. As offices look to purchase equipment to increase the productivity and efficiency of their employees, they should also take into account the equipments' safety.

Small businesses should consider the following tips to help minimize the risk of injury when equipment is involved.
  • Repair or replace frayed electrical cords, loose or broken electrical wires and broken outlet covers before using them to eliminate fire hazards.
  • Do not place office equipment such as typewriters or index files on the edges of desks, filing cabinets or tables.
  • When not in use, store paper cutters with the blades fully drawn down and secured.
  • Lift electrical cords off the floor and away from walkways to reduce tripping accidents.
  • Do not place liquids on or around electrical equipment (printers, computers); spills can increase the risk of electric shock.
In addition to the safety risks above, shredders have become one of the most prevalent pieces of office equipment due to the increase in privacy legislation and identity theft concerns. In fact, 80 percent of businesses today have shredders1. Fellowes, the leading shredder manufacturer, addresses workplace safety concerns with its Powershred office series and MicroShred shredders, which meet the unique demands of all users without compromising on the need for safety.

The shredders feature a patent-pending SafeSenseT technology that ensures the safety of the user by automatically disabling the shredder when sensing hands are too close to the "throat" or paper entry. An electronic sensor surrounds each shredder's paper entry and shuts down the machine immediately when it comes in contact with the energy field created by humans.

"Workplace safety is very important regardless of a company's size or number of employees," said Kristen Gehrig, director, global marketing at Fellowes, Inc. "Safety has always been a top priority for Fellowes. Our new shredders were specially designed to meet employers' demands for high security without sacrificing the safety of their employees."

Powershred Series
The Powershred office series features confetti-cut capabilities, ensuring that private information is destroyed into small, unidentifiable pieces. The PS-77Cs, SB-87Cs and SB-97Cs can handle 12 to 17 sheets of paper per pass and safely shred staples, paperclips, credit cards and CD/DVDs. The Powershred office series is available at select office retailers nationwide.

MicroShred
The MicroShred series, including the MS-460Cs and MS-450Cs, feature MicroShred capabilities which help ensure confidential information is rendered unidentifiable by shredding paper into pieces significantly smaller than the length of a staple. The shredders also feature SilentShredT performance, which alleviates common volume concerns in shared workspaces and homes with its whisper-quiet motor. The shredders can handle seven and 10 sheets of paper per pass, and safely shred staples, paperclips, credit cards and CD/DVDs. The machines are ideal for individuals who require high security, such as human resource professionals and accountants.

The MicroShred series is available through the OfficeMax catalog and online at www.officemax.com. In addition, the MS-450Cs will be available in stores nationwide beginning February 2007.
