WHAT IS THE CORRECT HEIGHT FOR YOUR COMPUTER MONITOR?

The position of our computer monitor can make a huge difference to our health and wellbeing at work. The distance and height of our screens in relation to our bodies determine how comfortably we sit, and how much strain we put on our backs, necks, eyes, and shoulders.

To minimise the risk of musculoskeletal injuries, we need to adjust our monitors – whether a desktop PC or laptop - to the right position, making sure that all our workstation furniture and accessories are set to support a healthy posture. Let's take a look at how we can achieve this.

Three key factors to consider when setting up your monitor

1. Eye height

Working in a healthy seated posture starts by making sure that the top of our screens is level with our eyes, or slightly higher if we’re using a larger screen.

By sitting with the correct posture, we can start to work out where this level should be, and then adjust the equipment in our workspace.

2. Arm’s length

Next up, we want to make sure our computer monitors are about arm’s length away, so that we can just about touch the screen with our fingertips.

If you’re using a larger screen, or working with multiple screens, you might want to move back a few inches to prevent having to twist your neck and strain your eyes.

3. Screen Tilt

Lastly, the top of the monitor should be tilted slightly away from us, by around 15-20 degrees. This helps to reduce glare, makes it easier to read the screen and encourages us to maintain a good posture by looking straight ahead.

Elevating Your Monitor

In most cases, to achieve the desired monitor setup we’ll need to employ the use of a monitor arm, monitor stand or laptop stand.

Monitor Arms

A monitor arm helps by positioning our screen at the right ergonomic height and distance, with just a few simple adjustments.

Most monitor arms can be easily adjusted and will stay in place, removing the need for constant alteration. However, they can also be great for sharing ideas with colleagues with a simple turn of a screen, while they also give us the flexibility to adjust our screens effortlessly throughout the day.

Monitor arms can also be especially useful in hot desking environments, where people are switching desks from day to day, and need to quickly adjust their monitors each time.

Monitor Stands

An alternative to the monitor arm is the monitor stand, also known as a monitor riser. This is a portable piece of equipment that can be moved between workspaces, typically offering several different height settings, and storage and device channels for easy charging.

Despite being simpler pieces of equipment than monitor arms, stands and risers are very effective, especially if your monitor will stay in a fixed position.

Laptop Stands

Laptop stands are ideal for anyone on the move that needs to work healthily in a range of environments, from a train table or coffee shop to home office. They elevate laptops to a comfortable viewing position, some providing finger touch height adjustment and others a choice of adjustable height settings so that users can find the right position.

These are particularly important when using a laptop in conjunction with a computer monitor, as we need the top of both screens to be level with one another to prevent shoulder, neck and eye strain.

Achieving an Ergonomic Desk Setup

It’s also important to consider your desk setup when finding the correct monitor height for you. We’ve picked out a few key points below.

Adjustable Chairs

Office chairs should be height adjustable so that we can lift or lower these, and our feet are flat to the floor, or fully supported by a footrest. We should be able to adjust a chair every time we use it to achieve this, and make sure that our upper legs are parallel or slightly lowered towards the floor.

Your chair should also provide support for our lower backs, and if it fails to do so you might want to consider investing in a lumbar support.

Height Adjustable Desks

Height adjustable or sit-stand desks can be lowered or raised so that the computer monitor is in the right position, but also offer the option of the day.

Movement is key to preventing musculoskeletal issues, so the added benefits offered by height-adjustable desks are definitely worth your consideration.

Keyboard and mouse position

Our keyboard and mouse should be within close reach and allow us to work with our lower arms parallel to the desk and our elbows at a 90-degree angle.

A wrist rest and keyboard rest can help us keep a healthy position and reduce the risk of repetitive strain injury.

Benefits of Correct Monitor Setup

Reducing the Strain

Achieving the right monitor height is one of several crucial steps to maintaining a good posture, reducing strain on our bodies, and enhancing our overall wellbeing.

It’s about taking the time, particularly in a new work setting, to position the equipment around us so that we can work ergonomically and not put our bodies at risk.

Workstation accessories, designed in line with approved ergonomic standards, can help us feel comfortable and productive while we’re working and reduce the risk of musculoskeletal injuries. By following these guidelines, we can create a comfortable and ergonomic setup that supports good posture and keeps us healthy, happy and productive at work.
